The best travel tips for seniors

by the Editor, SeniorInsider | Jun 02, 2011

If you are currently planning to do a little traveling there are definitely some important travel tips to keep in mind. At any age, it is important to be a savvy traveler; however, when you are a senior it pays even more to be prepared. This is particularly true if you’re Internet savvy and handling your own travel plans or senior tours, as you may not be aware of tips a travel professional may be able to offer you. This article will explore some other important travel tips that can be very beneficial for seniors.

Senior Travel Insurance

One thing that you definitely will want to look into before you embark on your journey is senior travel insurance.  This kind of insurance will cover you financially if you have to cancel your trip due to sickness or even bad weather. Also if you happen to become ill or need medical attention during your trip, senior travel insurance will cover you as well.  In the event that something unexpected does happen, senior travel insurance can quickly save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

The Benefits of Senior Tours

One major benefit to being a senior is that you can participate in senior tours.  This means that you can travel with others in your age group. If you are traveling alone, senior tours can really be an amazing way to gain some company and make new friends. Senior tours can also offer significant cost savings.

Senior Tours Mean Someone Else Plans the Agenda

The diversity of senior tours available is rather impressive. You can find senior tours that cover everything from cruises to resorts.  Plus, tour coordinators often plan your agenda for you so that you don’t have to spend time organizing all of your activities yourself. This will allow you to relax and enjoy your destination with fewer hassles. Plus, you will feel as though you don’t have to constantly make decisions about where to go and what to do.

Consider Medical Checkups Before Your Trip

If you are going somewhere exotic, you might need to have shots and/or vaccinations before your trip. It’s even required for travel to some parts of the world. It is also a good idea to visit the doctor to make sure that you are in optimal shape to travel. These suggestions are not only important for senior travel, but for anyone who is planning a trip.

If you have any medical conditions it is also important to make sure that you have enough medication for your trip.  If you are traveling across time zones, you might need to ask your doctor for assistance regarding when you should take your pills as figuring this out can get rather confusing.

Senior Travel Insurance Isn’t All You Need to Cover Your Travel

Make sure that you are well equipped for the flight. Sitting for long periods of time can sometimes cause blood clots in the legs.  Be sure that you periodically get up and stretch on the flight. You might want to also perform some small exercises, like gentle foot rotations, while you are seated. Also drink lots of water and avoid alcoholic beverages.

Senior Travel Insurance Will Save You Money, But Also Consider Senior Discounts

Don’t be afraid to ask about senior travel discounts. There are many available on travel even in addition to those available through senior tours. You can find discounts on everything from rental cars to airplane tickets and many attractions offer online coupons that you can print out. After all, saving a few dollars on a trip can make it an even more enjoyable adventure.
